How to Be an Eco-Conscious Manufacturer

Many companies are going green today, and not only because it's good for the environment. Although a financial liability in the short term, companies expect going green to pay off in the long run.

As consumers become more environmentally conscious, they are looking for products made by companies that are ecologically minded. Not only that, green company products are in demand by other companies. B2B eco-friendly exchanges boost the green profile of both companies.

One example of going green, as reported in an article in Industry Week, is the firm of Diamond Wipes International in Chino, California, which recently installed almost 3,400 solar panels. The panels provide enough energy to run the entire company.

In addition to the panels, Diamond has also completed a number of environmentally friendly projects that cover both its manufacturing and distribution processes. The company is working toward certification by the Forest Stewardship Council, which monitors the path of wood products from forest to the stores to make sure companies are using sustainable manufacturing practices. Diamond has also switched from hard plastic packaging to biodegradable, compostable products.

The move, company officials told Industry Week, was made because consumers want to buy products from companies that are managed in an environmentally friendly way.

Improve Your Recruitment

"If you want to improve your recruiting," says business consultant Jon Picoult, "try giving job candidates a pleasant surprise." Just what does he mean by that?

One way to give them a pleasant surprise is by just being professional. These are what you might call the basics. Make sure the employment application is easy to fill out. Have a job description that is clear and gives all the pertinent information about a job. And return applicants' phone calls in a timely manner.

All of these things may look like so much of the obvious. But, Picoult says, many companies ignore them, making the process that much more difficult for applicants.

eLearning: The Future of Training Industrial Workers

Many industrial companies need to do continual training to keep their workers up to date on current technology and processes. And more and more, companies are turning to online training, otherwise known as eLearning, as a method of instruction.

There are a number of advantages in using eLearning to train workers.

One major advantage is that it can be accessed at any time and any place, unlike traditional classroom learning. Because of this, it does not disrupt production. And it can also help reduce the costs of training.
