How To Staff Your Organization Like Apple's Retail Store

What is it about the Apple Store that's just so great? Is it the super chic product line? The fact that you can tinker with just about anything in there? The super mod layout and design? All of those things are neat, sure, but I'd argue there's something more--something you may not have paid as much attention to.

Apple is running a seriously smooth operation in their retail stores. Each employee has a distinct role to play, understands that role, and does his/her part to deliver the level of service we've come to expect from this powerful brand. All of this requires serious alignment of brand, business goals and people process.

Finding the right people to work in the stores is half the battle. Click here to see what Apple's retail arm does particularly well in organizational development--things any organization could learn from.

e-Learning: the Future of Learning for Industrial Workers

If you're looking for a way to train your industrial workers inexpensively, take a look at e-learning.

A December 2001 article on the site e-Learning.com discusses "E-Learning for the Industrial Worker," and reports that e-learning, especially for compliance and safety training, "ensures that your entire workforce receives consistent, documented safety and compliance training."

The article quotes adult learning theorist Malcolm Knowles, who says there are nine components to look for when researching a good e-learning program.

Unemployment in the Inland Empire

The unemployment rate in the Inland Empire (San Bernardino and Riverside counties) went up slightly in January to 12.4 (the latest figures available), but the number of jobs added increased compared to January 2011, according to a March 10 article on the Coachella Valley newspaper, MyDesert.com.

The article reports on the California Employment Development Department's (EDD) March 9 report that the non-farm job rate increased by 19,400 jobs, to 1.14 million over the past year.

According to the article:

"A 1.7 percent job growth rate is not a solid or strong recovery; nonetheless, companies are hiring people," said Esmael Adibi, an economist with the A. Gary Anderson Center for Economic Research at Chapman University.

"We'd like to see that growth rate not at 1.7 percent but at 3 or 4 percent," he said. "That's really when you make a big dent in the unemployment rate."
